Hello San Diego!

Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer. This month's Recipe of the Month is forspicy and tangy(and utterly delicious)Senegalese Poulet Yassa. Our Book of the Month selection is the 2023 Booker Prize-winning Time Shelter by Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov. Our choice for International Music of the Month is Itku by Okra Playground, an electro-folk band from Helsinki, Finland. Enjoy!

On to the events!

The San Diego Asian Film Festival wraps up this weekend! Throughout the weekend, the Coronado Island Film Festival is taking place in Coronado. Also on today and tomorrow, the The El Alebrije Ballet, a reimagining of The Nutcracker ballet through dance, theater, music, and puppetry will be performed at the California Center of the Arts in Escondido. And Junior Theatre's rendition of the Sound of Music will continue throughout the weekend.

Tonight(Friday), Pacific Arts Movement will host their annual Chew the Scene in celebration of this year's Asian Film Festival. There will be a Native American Art Show at the Exclusive Collections Gallery in the Gaslamp. Metalachi will be thrashing power chords at The Holding Company. Indigenous musicians Mato Wayuhi & Xiuhtezcatl will perform at the House of Blues. There will be a performance by the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens at the Balboa Theatre. At the Balboa Park's Hall of Nations, UCSD Professor Emeritus Pasquale Verdicchio will read his own poems and works by renowned Italian poets. At the Encinitas Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, you can take in a Carnatic Music Concert. Mexican group Son Rompe Pera will perform at UCSD's Epstein Amphitheater. The German Kino series will continue at the Digital Gym with a screening of Good Bye Lenin! There will be additional showsthe next day and the following Wednesday. Hawaii's Inna Vision will perform with Gonzo of Tribal Seeds at Winstons.

Saturday, the Worldbeat Center will host a World Naan Championship. Warwick's will host A.K. Blakemore as she discusses her new book, The Glutton. Alliance Française San Diego will present an eventfeaturing a discussion with Three French Authors. There will be 2 Coco Live-To-Film Concerts, the first will be in Spanish at 3:30 PM and then there will be an English language renditionat 7:30 PM. The Corazon de Vida Gala will raise funds to help orphaned and abandoned children in Baja. The Dance House will hold a Bollywood Social replete with a beginner dance class. The closing night film for the Asian Film Festival will be Moustache by Imran J. Khan.

Sunday, the Ukrainian Mosaic Orchestra will perform at Oceanside High School. At Stein Family Farm, there will be a Hands-on Kimchi Workshop. The Maya Moon Collective on Adams Avenue will host a Miso MakingWorkshop. Regional Mexican newcomer Ivan Cornejo will perform at SDSU's Open Air Theatre. At St. Paul's Cathedral & Episcopal Church, flutist, Julia Barnett, & Pianist, Kathryn Lieppman present a recital ofMusic by Mexican Composers. At AYA downtown, there will be a Taiwanese American Showcase.

Monday, there will be a Chinese Studies Calligraphy Workshop at UCSD. Allison Adams Tucker Trio will perform at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.

Tuesday, Rudy Shappee will talk about the history of Dutch Pilgrims journey to the Plymouth Plantation. Comedian Jiaoying Summers will perform two shows at Mic Drop Comedy. The exuberant farce P.P. Riderwill be shown at the Digital Gym. Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness will perform at UCSD.

Wednesday, there will be a talk on How the Early Chinese American Experience Shaped the Greatest Generation in WWII. Warwick's will host Jessica Keith as she discusses and signs her new book, Saying Inshallah With Chutzpah: A Gefilte Fish Out of Water Story.

Next Thursday at UCSD, historian Jeffrey Veidling willgive a talkIn the Midst of Civilized Europe: The Pogroms of 1918-1921.

Next Friday, Piper Jones will perform Celtic music at Templar's Hall in Old Poway Park.

Next Saturday and Sunday, the inaugural San Diego Anime Convention will take place at the Handlery Hotel. At the Casa del Prado building in Balboa Park, there will be a Japanese Brush Painting Exhibition.

Next Saturday at the Chinese Historical Museum, curator Clare Chu will talk about Miniature Treasures of the Qing Dynasty and Beyond. At the Central Library, Culinary Historians of San Diego present The Whole Schmear: The History of Cream Cheese in America. Silayan Filipina will hold their 10-Year Anniversary Gala at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. A Filipino Press Thanksgiving Extravaganza will take place at the Ramada in National City. The films Pandemic Bread & The Kill Floor will be screened at the Digital Gym. There will be a San Diego Tết Festival Fundraiser Concert at the Diamond Palace. Mexican singer and actress Edith Marquez will perform at the Balboa Theatre. Brazilian singer-songwriter Rafa Pondé will perform at Winstons.

Next Sunday, the classic film Revenge of the Ninja will screen at the Digital Gym. At Shoreline Park, there will be a Pacific Rim Park Friendship Walk.At WNDR Museum, the Artitude: Bridging Cultures Through Art and Music event will presenta fusion of interactive art and dance & rhythms featuring two floors of music, and 20+ immersive and interactive art exhibits. There will be a Filipino Parol Lantern Workshop at the Balboa Park Club. The Cowboy Star Restaurant will hold a Friendly Feast AAPI Chefs Bake Sale. Allison Adams Tucker will present the 15th Annual Brazil Jazz Festa at Dizzys. And Jenny and the Mexicats will perform at Music Box.

Local ongoing theatrical productions include Xanadu at the Coronado Playhouseand Junior Theatre's The Sound of Music at the Casa del Prado Theater.

Our Recipe of the Month is for Senegalese Poulet Yassa a delicious dish of chicken marinated with citrus, mustard and hot peppers. It is then cooked with a copious amount of onions. Served with couscous, it is a delightful repast indeed!
